I should add these remote control access programs need a program installed
on the remote machine (usually with a password). Once this is in place and
firewall settings adjusted it should work without problems. LMI uses a web
interface to access the client, VNC uses a VNC client program to talk to
the remote machines "server" program.
If you are remotely accessing your own computer, using Remote Desktop is the
best way. To use Remote Desktop, the remote machine needs to be running XP
Pro, Windows Server or Vista Ultimate/Business/Enterprise.
If you are using XP Home, or Vista Home Premium/Basic something like LogMeIn
might be more your thing, or VNC.
But what I wanted to mention is that there is a very easy to use software
called TeamViewer, which you can use on any Windows machines. It is much
easier to configure than VNC and no messing around with router port
forwarding is needed. If you need to repair somebody else's computer
remotely, it is very easy for the other person to run the server program
without even needing to install it and they can be instructed over the phone
or Skype.
