Login failure

I have a 4 node xp pro lan. Recently laptop M lost all its settings and was
replaced with a new Dell laptop. There is another laptop B, a Desktop
system S and another desktop system being used as a file server for ACT. I
created a user named Matt on the file server pc, verified it is in the
various groups, made sure it is in the allow to connect and does not exist
in deny of the computer management security of the file server pc, all pc's
have access to the file server pc except laptop M. On Laptop M I have set
the computer name and login name the same, I can see the workgroup and can
access the other pc but can not get access to the file server pc. When I
attemp to do so I get login failure. I can get access to the file server pc
from another pc on the net using the login name and password assigned for
laptop M. I also can get access to the shares if I use net use command. The
file server pc is not set to be a domain. The site also uses a vpn
connection to a corp office net. That is working fine on all pc's. The
file server pc is windows xp pro sp1. all others are windows xp pro sp2.

I am losing what hair I have left on this one. This should be such a simple
setup, yet I have chased my tail for 2 days. Even contacted Dell, which was
no help although they did try but everything they suggested I have tried and
reverified even again with Dell. Anyone have any suggestions.........

What's the complete and exact error message?

If that doesn't help, one very common cause of this problem would be a
misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall. And there are other
possibilities too.

If that's not any help, provide a complete description of the LAN.

Finally, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we
can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely:
