Logging in to Windows XP Pro

Hello,

Can anyone help? A friend of mine has one user account on Windows XP Pro.
When he boots up his laptop it asks for a username and password. It's so long
since he used his laptop that he can't remember what his password is and he
didn't enter a password hint when he set it up.

Is there a way around this other than re-installing Windows?

Presuming this this a Windows password not a BIOS password, at the
Welcome screen press Ctl-Alt-Del twice and log in as administrator. If
XP was pre-installed then it's almost certain there is no password for
the Administrator account. You can then reset the users password.
