local area network connection

My computer is experiencing problems with the LAN connection in Windows XP
home. The connection will not establish an IP address. I perform the
command ipconfig/renew in the command prompt and receive the following
message: "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection
6: The system cannot find the file specified." This leads me to believe that
the problem is with a missing windows system file. Do you agree that
reinstalling windows on top of the current system will help?

Thanks in advance

Not yet. Go to device manager and remove your network devices. Uninstall
all network protocols and delete the connections. Restart, maybe windows
will reinstall everything it needs. There's also a tool on the internet
that restores networking. Sometimes uninstalling file sharing programs
kills your network access. Don't remember what's the tool is, it's been
awhile, but it did wonders for my friend's comp.

I dont mean to post in your spot, but I've got a thread and its not getting
any response. I'm sort of having the same problem, while surfing the net
whenever I try to play media through Internet explorer, the media player
(windows media player 10) and IE will sometimes hang, then become
unresponsive, so I "control, alt, delete" and end the tasks. After that I'll
try to get back into the net but I get the "page cannot be displayed"
message. I then go into "my network connection" and see my IP address is "my"
IP address, not the 169 one. I try to repair the connection and I get the
"cannot repair/renew Ip address, contact your ISP or network administrator"
message. I've reset my modem, thats no good either. The only way I can back
into the net is restarting my computer. If anyone can help me out here,
thanks.
