Spyware/Adware removal disabled my Network connection....HELP

D

David M. Bauer

Hello-

Had a huge spyware/adware problem and used, Spybot Search and Destroy,
AdawareSE, and Pest Patrol, which took care of the adware/spyware
problems just fine, however what they removed totally wiped out my
Network connection. I cannot repair or delete the present one, nor can
I create a new Network connection.

I did the following check on the system: Start/Run/cmd
(Readout is below)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Microsoft Windows XP (Version 5.1.2600)
F:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ipconfig /renew
Windows IP Configuration
An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : An
operations
was attempted on something that is not a socket.
F:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Is there a method to transfer files from one hard drive to another or to
recover files from the installation disk to correct this problem? I
have Windows 98 on drive C, XP pro installed on drive D and another copy
of XP installed on drive F(the one with the Network problem). The
Internet connections on Drive C+D are fine.

I'm hoping that I won't have to re-install Win XP to fix this.

Thanks,
DMB

Hi David,

See if resetting the Winsock configuration helps. Create a system restore point and then follow the Winsock repair advice here: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/winsock.htm. If you have SP2, you may use the NETSH command-line.

[If you have suddenly lost your Internet connection after removing
spy-ware
(such as NewDotNet, and Commonname) the following steps will help
restore
your connection. This works for Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP.

1.) Download WinsockFix.zip. (by: Option^Explicit)

2.) UnZip WinsockFix.zip (Pay close attention to where the file is
extracted
to.)
3.) Run WinsockFix.exe.
4.) Click the Fix button.

This program will clean up your TCP/IP connection and rebuild the

Hey Guys and Gal,

Special thanks to all three of you for helping me out and giving me the
info to correct the problem. I don't know what I'd do without people
like you, who take the time to respond to questions and problems.

I was really upset with the thought of having to repair via the
installation disk and you guys made my day ... I now have my connection
back and I'm smiling Big BIG!

Again, many thanks
Dave
