Local Area Connection Icon after SP2 Installation

B

Ben Collins

After installing SP2 a new icon showed up next to my DSL
connection icon in the lower right of my screen. This is
a Local Area Connection icon and it has an exclamation
mark inside a yellow triangle.....some sort of warning I
assume.

If I disable this function I lose my DSL connection, but
when I right click it and check status it says "Limited or
No Connectivity".

How can I get rid of this icon and be sure everything is
operating at peak performance? Note, when I run
the "Repair" function it tries to renew the IP address,
but fails. Also note, there is only one PC connection
using DSL....no other network connections.

Plz help....Thanks, Ben.

Do you see anything when you double click or right click on the icon?

Thanks Ted.

R clicking icon displays:

Status: Limited or No Connectivity
Duration: 47.23 [time online OK]
Speed: 100.0 mbps

Activity -- shows display of packets sent (3,203) and
packets received (5,129)

In Properties I have unchecked "Show Icon in notification
area when connected", and have checked "Notify me when
this connection has limited or no connectivity".

I am communicating OK, but it's as if this Local Area
Connection thinks it's having a problem.

Note, I'm not that technically proficient, but there is
only one PC communicating with my ISP via DSL...no
networked PCs, no routers, etc.

Please advise again, if you don't mind.

Thanks.

Your DSL connection is the problem, not SP 2. You need to work with your ISP
and the manufacturers of your hardware to be sure that every part of your
Internet connection - software, drivers and hardware - is compatible with SP
2. The service pack enforces stringent security standards that in many cases
require updates to hardware and software.
