DSL/Local Area Connection

Guest

At the bottom left, I have two connection icons...One has a yellow
exclamation and reads "Local area connection - Speed 10.0 Mbps - Status
Limited or no connectivity"... The other is my DSL conx. icon with
sent/rec'd data. In local area conx. properties, 4 boxes are checked..Client
for MS networks - File and printer sharing for MS networks - QoS Packet
scheduler -and- Internet protocol TCP/IP...

At start up, there's a long delay until the modem begins flashing, then the
LAC icon (yellow "!") finally appears... Do I have some conx. that I don't
need?? Other than the long start time (1.5 minutes), all else is cool.

XP Home / v2002 / SP2 -- Dell DIM3000 - P4 2.8 - 512

As always...Thanks very much!

Hi MrGib,

Sounds like you have connection management software, and its loading is why
you have a delay before the connection is open. It's also why you see two of
them in the system tray, one is the software's, the other is Windows reading
the activity at the nic connection. The four networking items you listed are
those that are normally installed by default for a TCP/IP connection,
there's nothing wrong with any of that.

I generally avoid any connection software, but if it's working there is no
reason for you to change any of it.

forgive me if i'm reading this wrong, but to help decrease startup time,
try leaving the modem on. there's really no reason to turn it off.

from what you've said, it sounds like your pc is waitng for a DHCP
response, which can't happen until the dsl modem is synced up with the
head-end.

MrGib:

Your best route is to use a Cable/DSL Router such as the Linksys BEFSR41.

Such a device will provide you with many benefits that include, but is not limited to...
- Simplistic FireWall to protect against Hackers and Internet worms
- If the DSL is PPPoE the Router, not the PC, will make the connection
- NO ISP provided software is needed ona any LAN node
- Share the one WAN address with up to 253 LAN nodes
- Easy configuration of LAN nodes via Router DHCP server

As always, I suggest blocking both TCP and UDP ports 135 ~ 139 and 445 on *any* SOHO Router.
