.lnk and .exe problem

Hi

My problem is: all .lnk files are unrecognised. All .lnk files linked to
..exe files do not work. All .exe files do not work and are also
unrecognised. for example, If I want to use iexplorer.exe windows asks me
what program to open with, if I choose IE (i.e. the correct program) it still
will not open. Because no .exe files will open I can not do a system restore
as rstrui.exe will not open, also I have tried reinstalling XP but this does
not work, I presume because setup.exe on the CD can not be opened.

Can anybody help me? I presume this is a result of some spyware/virus etc?

Sounds like the same problem I am having. Try to open anything, word, excell, ie and the "open with" window comes up. Selecting the same group ,{ ie excell, ie} a pop-up says there is no .exe. If you get a corrective answer please let me know.
