Live OneCare let in a virus

I used AVG for years, didn't get a single virus.

Switched to Live OneCare as it has a firewall, after 2mo got a virus.

Is this normal?

Thanks

A firewall, per se, will NOT defend you against viruses.

The OP switched to Windows Line One Care because it had a firewall, which is
in addition to the Anti-Virus feature it has.

Based upon many posts I've seen in the MS newsgroups, Live One Care doesn't
do a very good job with its A/V.

as an aside, how different is the firewall in One Care from the firewall in
XP SP2?

You need to know that not all anti-virus applications are able to stop
all viruses. Each depend on the definition updates which some
software companies can be "slow" in getting ready.

(most) Virus checkers rely on signature files, which are developed from
looking at infections, ergo some (many) careless folks get infected
before the antidote is developed, and distributed.

A Virus checker is the last resort of the intelligent user. If you don't
open unknown attachments, don't visit dubious websites, don't run file
sharing applications, and don't install Warez, and in general practise
safe Hex, your virus check, however incompetent, will probably never
have anything to do anyway.

M$ 'buffer overrun' bugs, and general system stupidities excepted,
although even many of those are plugged by a decent firewall.

Thanks for the info.

I think its unlikely to be a co-incidence that I get a virus only 2mo
after joining the microsoft antivirus software.

Perhaps I'll go back to good ol' AVG.

But do I need a firewall? Is the XP firewall sufficient for normal use?

Thanks

I can't answer the question about what is normal, but I'll make three
observations:

1. AVG is almost certainly a better anti-virus product than Live OneCare.

2. No anti-virus product is perfect. No matter how good it is, you are
always at risk from the viruses that have come out since the last virus
definitions were issued.

3. The risk of virus infection is increasing all the time. Comparing
infection rates over the years you used AVG with infection rates now isn't
really meaningful.

Thanks for thei info.

Can anyone let me know if the firewall in Live Onecare is the same as
the standard XP firewall.

Do you need a firewall, besides XP's, at all?

I note that while was using free AVG, my friend's PC got a virus while
they were using paid for Norton.
