LiteStep themes...

Hello people!

On my question "How to use Win XP themes in Win 98" I got the suggestion of use
of LiteStep. Installed it and it's faster than the standard Win 98 shell.

Question:

Does someone here have a good source of themes for LiteStep? Their official site
is confusing - there isn't a way to search for a given theme.

I am looking for some theme that looks like UNIX/Linux window manager.
(you can see screenshots of them at http://xwinman.org )

Thanks.

I don't know about the skin you are looking for but there are several
sites that have litestep downloads. This is the site I
use:http://browse.deviantart.com/skins/themes/litestep/?view=1&order=5&limit=24

I think you can find skins at wincustomize as well. Do a google search
for litestep themes.

Hurray! One more convert! You'll never look back.

The largest theme archive I know is at http://www.litestep.net/. You'll
have to register for access, but it's really harmless.

There isn't a better source, really, though there are several other
sites that host LiteStep themes. None of the rest list them by
standard, though, and for ease of installation you need to stick with
OTS2, at least until you're comfortable hacking the scripts.

Perhaps the best way of picking your way through the themes at the
official site - I agree that the search facility is inadequate - is by
author. Authors tend to have areas of interest, and once you find a
few that concentrate on the type of theme you want you'll have some to
choose from.

If you select the "Links" tab at litestep.net, you'll find most of the
other theme repositories. The French and German LiteStep sites seem
to have a good selection of well worked out themes - I've downloaded a
few from them.

Feel free to email me if you think I can help.

I am registered at it. But the interface is confusing and there are some
rendering bugs with Mozilla Firefox.

I found a nice theme (CDE-like) but it is for older versions, smaller
resolutions, and crashes the current version. :/

A good idea. Thanks!

Found some really cool ones there:

Thanks for the ideas.

Okay, I guess I misunderstood what you meant by "official homepage" :)

I recently heard that there's work being done to renew the site... so
things might get better in the near future.

Yep. The latest build of LiteStep can't find its files in the older
themes and goes into a huge sulk. This can give rise rise to an
anxious moment or two as you repeatedly reboot into an unresponsive
interface ;-)

Obviously, you've found a way around this problem but for anyone else
trying LiteStep or one of the other shell replacements there are a
number of strategies for getting out of this sticky predicament. In
later Windows OSes, task manager's "run" command will allow you to run
explorer.exe and sort things out. That doesn't work in Win 95 - I
can't remember whether or not it does in 98. There are various shell
switchers that can be used too, but I'm unable to recommend any as I
haven't tried them. Several can be found here:
http://www.shellcity.net/index.php

I have a file manager tied in to a hot key that doesn't depend on
LiteStep which gets me out of my frequent "stupid moments".

This isn't a stability issue; the only times I've been faced with a
frozen LiteStep interface have been when I was trying something that
seemed like a good idea at the time...
