Linux is ok, since its free, but how about a OS that saves you money?

Yes, but ... how often does it find something to download? One Tuesday a
month, right?

Windows (invented by PARC).

Palo Alto Research Center was well known for coming up with brilliant
ideas but failing to , commercialize them. AS the story went, it was
Jobs who first got the idea from PARC and popularized it. MS then
jumped on the bandwagon after that.

A product that never leaves the lab will not benefit the inventor or
the uesrs. Even though it's a "stolen" idea, I believe Apple and MS
both deserve some credits for bringing the windowing system to the
masses.

many things develop beyond reason
it seemed like a good idea at the time, then someone made some money
and there was no stopping it

So just _what_ has been produced?
cpu power 300 x in 15 years
storage 700x in 15 years
software productivty ??
I would hazard generally less than 5x, most of that simply because
the cpu and storage no longer need to be carefully handled.

We bought the house, it has no garage, no driveway, is far from
transport, overpriced with no services, the roof leaks, the foundations
are subsiding and there are termites in the frame
but it has 2 very pretty picture windows.

That would be so you can avoid using Windows.
There may be users out there who want to keep using MS Office even
though they want to get away from MS Windows.

The cult of msoffice is a big part of why I stopped using Windows.

I run my news client every day, but there hasn't been an update for
months. Geddit? Quit with the mendacity. It's transparent.

I judge by how often I have to log in in the mnorning - and it's a lot
more than once a month.

It would be even more frequently if we didn't have to wait over 2/3 of
a year for a critical update.

Jobs does - Gates simply stole it. But the biggest bear in the woods
does as he pleases.

What does your logging in every morning have to do with the frequency of
patches issued?

Well, that says a lot about Windows, doesn't it? :-0

Automatic Update reboots. I have to log in on a reboot. I don't run
anything else that reboots by itself, so ...

Oh? The fact that they've failed to come out with a patch for a
problem they acknowledged almost a year ago is a good thing in your
book?

You're not making anything clear here. I log in when I reboot as well ..
let's see .. that was over three weeks ago when I left town for a couple
days and shut down all my computers while I was gone, in case a
thunderstorm might have come by. Otherwise, they are always on.

No. Sorry,I didn't include <sarcasm> ... </sarcasm> tags around that
question. I thought it would be evident. The fact that there are known
Windows security holes for that length of time is inexcusable.

You schoolboys may want to consider a long overdue end to your silly
conversation over at 24hoursupport.helpdesk, not in alt.comp.freeware.
Don't forget to also go play outside.

I personally would slap a linux geek on the face if he giggled at me
saying that I was stupid because I used windows.
I would call that disrespect to what enabled him to be in that
position.

i'm not a linux user, i'ma windows user;
anyway consider reading this book (it's not a FUNNY book, it's philosophy):

Linux is a piece of shit....
Always has been, always will be !!!

I have used Linux (Red Hat, Ubuntu, Slackware, Debian) and had chances
to play with various UNIX (Solaris, *BSD, IRIX).

IMHO, Linux is a nice OS, but not quite ready for desktop, there are
some rough edges.

For servers, however, it does very well: I have routers and file servers
running on Linux.
