I have a linksys router with the newest firmware 1.45.7 and I can only chat
to a friend one way. I hear her but she doesn't hear me or She hears me and
I don't hear her. I am using MSN Messenger 6.1 with XP and she is using it
with WinMe. I have UPNP enabled. I also tried using windows messenger 5.0
and it still didn't work. We can send files and video fine but the audio
wont work. Anyone have any ideas ?

Greetings bogii,

Firstly, make sure both you and your contact have gone through the Audio (and Video) Tuning
Wizard in Messenger. To do so, open the main Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then
Audio Tuning Wizard, then go through the wizard to select and test your audio/video devices.

Then, you should verify that the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall isn't on -- click
Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and Internet
connections then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet connection,
then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that the Internet Connection
Firewall is unchecked. As well, if your contact is using some type of third-party firewall
(ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, etc.) have them make sure that Messenger is set to
"Permit All", "Allow All" or "Medium" (ZoneAlarm).

If that's not the case, you may need to remove the current port forwardings. To do so, click
Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Connections. Right-click the
"Internet Gateway" (should be under the Internet Gateway heading) and choose Properties.
Choose the Settings button click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entry and then choose 'Delete'
to each one. Then close Messenger (right-click the Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart
Messenger.

Also, you might try turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler. To do so, click Start, then click
the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and Internet connections then
click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet connection, then click
Properties. Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler, then reboot and try again.

May I add this LAST one to Jonathan Kay excellent
summary. For some reason the UPnP availability on the
Linksys BEFSR41W and BEFW11S4 is checked but there is
video but no audio on Messenger 6.1. This worked for me:
access the UPnP options inside the modem software and
uncheck and check each one again. Click OK. Nothing has
been changed but the options were refreshed. You will now
have sound.

[lots of good info]

Jonathan,

Thank you for the time and effort you put in here. But what happens
when all that you suggested has been done and the audio in MSN messenger
still does not work? Seem so me there may be a disagreement between
Microsoft and the various router manufacturers (particularly Linksys) as
to exactly how UPnP is supposed to work.

I also have a linksys router and posted a similar complaint in a previous
post. Try this link Bob gave me.After following the instructions, I know
have voice. I am running WinMe and it wasn't enough to enable UPnP.
Good luck,
Dee

Make sure UPnP is enabled on the router AND that you have
not stopped the service in Windows.
