Greetings,

MSN Messenger requires an Internet connection (connection to the .NET Messenger network). If
you were to use Windows Messenger, you can use it in a LAN environment with a SIP-based
Communications Server installed (like Live Communications Server 2003) or an Exchange 2000 IM
server.

However, as an even lower cost solution for LAN-based IM, see LanTalk XP:
