What protocol does MSN messenger used?

Hi All

What protocol and port number does MSN messenger used? I have blocked HTTP LAN to WAN access on the firewall, but users are still accessing MSN Messenger. Thanks in advance

Greetings June,

Messenger first tries using its own protocol (via TCP) on port 1863. If this can't be
established, it then tries on port 80 using HTTP.

The best way to block Messenger is to simply block connecting to addresses ending in
*.msgr.hotmail.com.
