LAN Status Icon - Packets versus Bytes

How do you change whether the activity of recieved and
transmitted data is counted in Packets or Bytes
I have some PCs that show bytes and some that show packets
I suppose if I knew what a packet equated to I wouldn't
mind but I don't and bytes I do!
Any help much appreciated.
