LAN Activity in Bytes instead of Packets???

Thomas Zack

Hi All,

Does anyone know how to get Windows XP to report LAN
activity on the taskbar icon in Bytes instead of
Packets? The modem equivelent uses Bytes, but the LAN
one uses Packets and I can't find out how to change this.

If no solution is available, anyone know how many Bytes
in a Packet?

Thanks,

Hi, Tom -

The difference in speed between a modem connection and an
Ethernet connection makes the number of bytes transferred
a huge number - and packets are easier to count.

The size of an Ethernet packet is determined by the
device that sends tke packet to your PC. The minimum
length of an Internet packet is 40 bytes - the maximum is
~1500 bytes.

If you're counting data only I found some interesting
statistics that said about half the traffic on the
Internet was in 552 or 576 byte packets and the majority
of the rest of the traffic was in 1500 byte packets.
Maybe you can figure total bytes transferred from that.

Bytes vs packets is decided by the driver for you network adapter. Perhaps
a newer driver would support bytes.
