LAN functions, but can't get to internet

P

Pete Stolz

Hi,
I have a small network on which all the computers function normally except
one new one can't get to the internet. There's four wired computers and one
wireless on a D-Link DI-624. All computers are either XP home or Pro. The
one in question is XP home. I can ping the router, I can see other
computers in the workgroup and their files, and I can see the offending
computer from others on the LAN. I thought somebody suggested a website for
this type of issue, but I can't find the thread now. It's really
frustrating because this is a computer for a security camera system that I'd
like to access from home as I once could. Thanks for the help!

Pete,

If the problem with the one computer is simply Internet access, let's look at
"ipconfig /all" for the problem computer, and for 2 of the properly working
computers.

Hi Chuck,
I'll do that on Monday when I go back to work, or I could have a guy do it
for me tomorrow. I know I have to do that command from a command prompt,
but what specifically should I look for so I know what to tell you? Thanks.

Hi Pete,

If you want to know what to look for, you should find information (and examples)
in the article.

Hi Pete,

If you want to know what to look for, you should find information (and examples)
in the article. If connectivity really is not an issue, then you'll be looking
at the DNS servers.

If the problem is not DNS related, then look at the MTU setting next.

Thanks a ton. I'll try my hardest not to bother you again. Which brings me
to another question--what motivates you to work so hard to help computer
doofuses like me? This must take a LOT of your time. Well, I'm sure I
speak for a LOT of people in this NG (both posters and lurkers) when I say
that your willingness to share your knowledge and resources is really
appreciated.

Pete,

I appreciate your sensitivity, but what DOES bother us the most is when someone
accepts the advice given, then never bothers us, to tell us how it turned out.
We're all learning here, some by doing, others by instructing. It's peer help.

So please DO bother me, and let us know how it turns out.

Ok. I did the ipconfig /all thing and here's what I got on the offending

Pete,

One of the things that intrigues me, when I try helping here, is situations like
yours.

Your stated symptoms:
# A LAN of 5 computers, all able to share files, connected to a NAT router and
using subnet 172.16.0/24.
# Some computers run Windows XP Home, others XP Pro.
# Some computers are connected by Ethernet, others by WiFi.
# Of the 5, 4 have Internet access, one doesn't.

Your documentation:
# Computer SecuritySystem has no Internet access. IPConfig log shows an
Ethernet connection, with a 172.16.0/24 address, and with DHCP and DNS.
# Computer Pete has Internet access. IPConfig log shows 2 IP connections:
## One connection (WiFi) has a 172.16.0/24 address, and has DHCP and DNS.
## One connection is a bridge, with DHCP server. The bridge is on the APIPA
subnet of 169.254/16.

I don't see a problem with SecuritySystem indicated here. What, precisely, are
your symptoms of no Internet access? Please diagnose your problem:
# From a command window:
1. Ping www.yahoo.com.
2. Ping 66.94.230.33.
3. Report success / exact text of error messages.
# From your browser:
1. Browse www.yahoo.com.
2. Browse 66.94.230.33.
3. Report success / exact text of error messages.

Hi Chuck,
I pinged first and browsed second. When I browsed the addresses, nothing
really happened. When I start IE, it says at the bottom "Finding site
www.microsoft.com" and never brings up a page. Could there be a problem
with IE? Thanks
Here's what I got with the pings:

Pete,

If the above is normal, and are seeing no error messages, then you have neither
a connectivity or DNS problem. I'm betting you have an MTU problem.

Or maybe LSP / Winsock corruption.

Hi Chuck!
Over the last couple of days, I tried to learn about the MTU possibility you
suggested. I studied your website and others. First thing this morning, I
optimized my MTU and it worked out to be 1492. After I changed it to that
with Dr. TCP, BOOM! I've got internet access on that computer! You were
right, it was an MTU problem. Thank you very much for your help. Everybody
else I spoke with had suggestions, but nothing worked. Thank you thank you
thank you!!!!

Pete,

One of the things that intrigues me, when I try helping here, is
situations like
yours.

Your stated symptoms:
# A LAN of 5 computers, all able to share files, connected to a NAT
router
and
using subnet 172.16.0/24.

IPConfig log shows 2 IP
connections:
## One connection (WiFi) has a 172.16.0/24 address, and has DHCP and
DNS.
## One connection is a bridge, with DHCP server. The bridge is on the
APIPA
subnet of 169.254/16.

I don't see a problem with SecuritySystem indicated here. What,
precisely, are
your symptoms of no Internet access? Please diagnose your problem:
# From a command window:
1. Ping www.yahoo.com.
2. Ping 66.94.230.33.
3. Report success / exact text of error messages.
# From your browser:
1. Browse www.yahoo.com.
2. Browse 66.94.230.33.
3. Report success / exact text of error messages.

Hi Chuck,
I pinged first and browsed second. When I browsed the addresses, nothing
really happened. When I start IE, it says at the bottom "Finding site
www.microsoft.com" and never brings up a page. Could there be a problem
with IE? Thanks
Here's what I got with the pings:

Pete,

If the above is normal, and are seeing no error messages, then you have
neither
a connectivity or DNS problem.

Pete

Pete,

Thanks for the update! It's intriguing how common the MTU setting problem is.
Vista will make it obsolete, but until then, it will come up from time to time.
