Working LAN, but no client Internet -Again

I have a problem with my mixed wired and wireless home lan and haven't been
able to connect to the internet.

I have a Linksys router and access point

My laptops have always been able to make it out and ping everything on my
workgroup. My sons pc would make it out to the internet, but I just installed
a wireless in place of a wired ethernet adapter (due to a new location for
the ethernet wiring caused by a change from dsl to optic fiber wan ) and it
has lost the internet.

The desktops can no longer ping the router so I know I wont make the
internet server. I can get the network connection details and they are the
same as the router info except for the Individual Computer IP address

I have not been able to get this one worked out and currently on the verge
of a hair twisting fit.

Any usefull help would be greatly appreciated

Jim

My desktop has had this problem since I tried to install a wireless ethernet
adapter many moons ago and I can't ping the router

Some really basic stuff first
1. Remove ALL firewalls (e.g. Zone alarm) and if possible turn off
firewall features of router.
2. Disable in Harware manager the ethernet adapters (I have sometimes
found machines having difficulty with 2 network cards)
3. The fact one pc can get out to internet would say there are problems
with the laptops/pc rather than the router
4. Being a wirless connection can you see the access point (can you
ping any of the other computers)
5. I am assuming you have set the pc's to get ip automatically (i see
DHCP enabled?)

I think you need to look at the actual computers as this seems to where
problem is
Need more info

The problem is with the desktop PC the only firewall installed is the one in
Windoze.

The problem is On good internet laptop I see my specific DNS to the Internet
server at Minetfiber.net when I do an ipconfig and the network conection
details look
good

On bad internet desktop i can see the network connection details and have an
established lease thru the default gateway. So they also look good.

But still no internet connection???

Jim,

Besides the known personal firewalls, there are numerous other security products
and settings that could cause your problem. Read this article with an open
mind.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

Look at the NetBT setting, for instance, on each computer.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html

And look at "browstat status", "net config server", and "net config
workstation", from each computer, too. Read this article, and linked articles,
and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp

Depending upon where the problem is, any or all of the above procedures may be
useful. You may also want to consider how you diagnose your problem.

1. The firewall involved is the windows version.

1. The PC that is not making it to the internet is a wired ethernet. There
is no firewall at the router since NIS2006&7 is used at the other computers.

2. There is only 1 wired ethernet card in the affected PC.

3. I can see the other computers in win explorer and do file copies and
printing to the desktop since it is used as the print server.

4. Wired Desktop PC (see 2).

5. What could be the culprit (hardware / software)if I see it and it does
everything in item 3???

Jim,

I can see the frustration here. Part of it may involve the multitude of
symptoms that you are faced with.
1) You earlier stated that "The desktops can no longer ping the router".
2) You earlier stated that "My sons pc ... has lost the internet.".
3) You now state that "I can see the other computers in win explorer and do file
copies and printing to the desktop since it is used as the print server.".

Let's attack each symptom, one at a time.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html

1) Can DADS_DESKTOP not ping the router? What do you get for "ping
192.168.1.1"?
2) What is the exact symptom of "My sons pc ... has lost the internet."?

For symptoms that concern Internet connectivity, diagnose that.

Nope

I have been able to hit the internet after an unistall and removing the
registry calls and doing a restart, but if I do another restart I will get
the BSofD

Well, a BSOD is a bit more severe than the typical "... has lost the internet."
symptom. Maybe that should be diagnosed first. Which registry calls do you
remove? What reference motivated you to remove registry calls?

Or, we could try and diagnose things a bit with CPSServ, run on both computers.

1) Can DADS_DESKTOP not ping the router? What do you get for "ping
192.168.1.1"?
2) What is the exact symptom of "My sons pc ... has lost the internet."?

For symptoms that concern Internet connectivity, diagnose that.

And for symptoms that concern file sharing (Windows Networking), diagnose that.
