Ishan

This problems seem to crop up on my my computer last
night. I usually use it to play music while im goin to
bed but last night the music just started slowing down
sort of like on a tape player when it has low batteries.
even though there were no other applications runnin in
the background.
Now today i cant listen to muisc while i do anythin else
it very choppy sometimes parts of songs just get skipped
over.
it doesnt matter wht i use winamp or media player they
both do the same thing even when they are the only thing
running it happens frequently.
I hit ctrl alt del and the cpu usage just keeps bouncing
up and down.
I have 3 svchost.exe on the list. Even though the total
usage thing says anything from 2 to 99 the system idle is
never less than 75 in the cpu coloumn on the list.
have no idea wht is goin on
i have a p4 1.7 with 512 rd ram never had this problem.
need help

Ishan,

Are you doing streaming audio, or playing music locally stored on the
computer? If streaming, you might want to check your network
(broadband?). Cable broadband might be more susceptible to problems
cause by your neighbors. Or your isp could be having trouble.

If you're playing a CD, it could be the CD. Or CD player.

The 3 svchost thing is normal - svchost.exe is a catchall process to
run numerous Windows services. Get Process Explorer from
http://www.sysinternals.com - it's free, and can tell you what modules
/ services are part of the svchost that is using up the cpu, and who
distributed / wrote them. BlackViper has a database that identifies
valid svchost services:
http://www.blkviper.com/Articles/OS/OSguides.htm

Have you run a malware check on your system recently? You should use
Spybot S&D and HijackThis (both free). HJT requires expert
interpretation of its findings. Start here:

No they are all files tht are on my computer. I ran
spybot and did the whole immunize thing as well there
wasnt much just some kazza stuff. I got rid of that but
it doesnt seem to help. I cant figure out if it a
perofrmance problem or just a music problem. It happens
with all music and video regradless of type mp3 avi mpeg
mov etc.
I think it a performance issue because the mouse movement
gets jerky when the musics gets grabbled. i not running
more than 2 max 3 applications when this problem occurs.
its always either media player + word + direct connect
tops.
last night i was trying to change my wallpaper when i was
runing winamp when i goto the browse option then the
directory where i keep my wallpapers to pick a wallpaper
the lagg was massive. cpu usage went upt to 99% mouse
movement got a bit jerky not much but the music was
totally botched slowed and grabbled song just skipped
entire parts.
i tried it again to see if i was just freaky accident but
it happened again. when i check what was using up the cpu
it was rundll32.
been searching the knowledge base for info on but cant
find anythin totally out of ideas. I NEED MY MUSIC !!!
HELP!!

Ishan,

First check for malware. Start here:
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=5187

If it's not malware, get Process Explorer from
http://www.sysinternals.com (free). Process Explorer will help you
look at the modules in rundll32, and find out who distributed or wrote
them.

Chuck
