keyboard setting problem. Windows XP

D

Doug

Dear Group,

I have encountered a rather bizarre problem with my laptop keyboard
recently. The operating system is Windows XP home. It happened soon
after I started using an external Apples keyboard. So I suspect they
might be correlated. The symptom are, when I strike keys in my laptop
keyboard, unexpected characters show up. I am listing the erroneous
keys below

5 i
1 j
2 k
3 l
0 m
n n
6 o
* p
q q
r r
s s
t t
4 u

The first column is the characters that show up, the second is what is
expected.

Meanwhile, the Apples keyboard functions great (I am using it right
now). In another user account of this same laptop, I do not encounter
this problem either.

I have tried to uninstall the keyboard, change the registry->keyboard
layout, copy a keyboard registry from another computer and change the
regional and language settings. Still the keyboard does not work
properly. I wonder if anyone could kindly offer me some suggestions.
I'd highly appreciate your help.

Best Regards,
Doug

Maybe the Num Lock key.

NumLock is on. If you look at those keys on the laptop keyboard, you can probability see the small number at the top of those keys. Look for a key labeled NumLock, NumLck, or something similar and press it. Depending on your laptop keyboard layout, you may have to press the Shift of Function key at the same time.

Thank you so much everyone. It was the numlock--I did not even know
there is a numlock key in my laptop. :)

Best Regards,
Doug
