keyboard disabled

Oscar Dinmohamed

I'm using windows 2000 professional service pack 3 on a
laptop.
This morning I restarted my laptop and the keyboard is
disabled, so I cannot re-logon.
I tried another external keyboard, but this doesn't work
either.
I restarted the computer, but still I cannot type any
characters in de user and password fields.
Also all keys on the keyboard are disabled.

So by laptop-keyboard and my external keyboard do not
work anymore.

Does anyone have a clue?
Thanks in advance.

As the operating system starts, tap "F8" and from the menu that appears,
choose Safe Mode. This may allow you to fix your problem and then restart,
logging in as normal.

Thanks Mike for your help.
I tried several safe modes (with dos prompt, without dos
prompt, etc) but still when the logon screen appears, the
keyboard is dead.
The mouse works ok, but I cannot logon, since I cannot
type any characters.
I found some sites on the internet (google) stating that
there is a virus which infects the registry, disabling
the keyboard, but I cannot edit the registry in DOS-mode.
I also searched for a backup registry, but.... no backup.
I'm pretty sure I save it a few months ago.

kind regards,

Try booting with a boot diskette from www.bootdisk.com. This will get you
to the root of your problem.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your help.
I did what you suggested, but I can't fix the problem.
When installing windows from the 4 diskettes the system
tries to fix the OS.
I choose to fix it automaticalley, but during the check
of the drives the system pops-up with a message saying
that it could not find a SP2.CAB file and that setup will
end. The only thing I can do is press F3-Quit.

I also tried to install and fix the OS with the emergency
disk, but when I insert the disk, the system keeps asking
to insert the disk.

When I decide to let the system search for the OS itself,
I get the first error message about the SP2.CAB file.

I searched on my C drive and the SP2.CAB file is in the
WINNT\I386 folder, so I don't see any problems.

Other suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Oscar

Sorry if I was vague, but the point of downloading and using the boot disk
was to see if your keyboard works in DOS mode. From the feedback you gave
here, I'm assuming that it does. The easiest option for you at this point
is to reinstall the operating system, since it looks like you have corrupt
files. This is a double-edged sword: your personal (data) files like
documents, pictures, etc. will be saved this way, but you'll have to
reinstall most of your programs because the registry will be deleted and
rebuilt. Boot from the Windows 2000 installation CD-ROM or your 4 boot
disks that you have, and the process will begin. Choose install instead of
repair.

Hi Mike,
Thanks again for your help.
Installing w2k pro from the diskettes and de cd-rom
doesn't work either. The problem seems to be severe and I
haven to take other measures.
I installed W98 on another partition and that worked well.
Then I will back-up all my personal files on cd and clean
the whole pc.
Then I will install w2k pro from scratch.

I have one question though:
Do you know the name of the outlook file where the e-
mails and adressbook resides?

I think the name is something like <user name>.pst but I
searched the whole computer (all drives and partitions),
but I can't find it.

Thanks in advance,
Oscar

If your Win2K partition is formatted with FAT32, you can do this. If you
used NTFS, then Win98 will not be able to read the partition, or the data on
it.
I have one question though:
Do you know the name of the outlook file where the e-
mails and adressbook resides?

By default, it is C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Personal Folders.PST. It's easy to change the file
name and location, and most people do, so you may end up searching for it.

You can back up this file and retrieve most of your data, but sometimes the
Contacts and Calendar are not the same after doing a simple file copy on
this file. The best way is to install Outlook, and use the built-in
exporter for backing up and restoring. Simply copying this one file will
copy all your email, however.

If you've used the "Archive" feature, don't forget the archive.pst file
also.

Hi Mike,
Win 98 is installed and I have all my personal files at
my disposal. I also found the outlook file (it was in a
hidden folder), so I'am very happy (given the
circumstances).

Thanks for your help, it was very good!

kind regards,
Oscar
