Keeps asking to Install - Silverlight Issues - need help.

Dear All,

firstly apologies if there is an official Silverlight Newsgroup, but I'm
unable to find it.

I have tried various ways to try to stop Silverlight telling me it needs to
be installed, I've searched Google, I've tried various Registry
changes/deletes as per advice from websites, it's is enabled in the Add-ons
on IE8, I've used Windows Uninstaller, I've used Revo Uninstaller, Windows
Uninstall Clean up, reset numerous times, deleted cache files from IE8 (and
Firefox) and still, if I go to my Nascar site, it says I need Silverlight
Installed, yet when I go to the Silverlight site, it appears to be working?
I'm confused... it is pointing me in the direction that the Nascar car site
is the issue, but when my fiancee goes to it herself on her machine,
everything works fine for her? so then it tells me it's an issue with my
machine?

I'm confused...

Anybody point me in the right direction for another alternative? or even a
site that uses it, so I can see (as it is integrated, there is no clear
indication the site is using it)

Regards
Paul.

Where is this message displayed? Is it in the systems tray - i.e. in the
bottom right corner? If so then it looks like the Windows Automatic Updater
has already downloaded the software and waiting for you to install it when
you get time. This happens if your automatic update is in item 3 -
"Download for me but let me choose when to install".

If this is the case then you need to find a way to delete the cache of these
downloaded files from here:

<C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution>

The easiest way I find is to boot up the system in safe mode and then going
to that folder and delete everything from it. When you reboot, the fresh
folders with the same names but without anything in it will be recreated.
All the nagging alerts will also disappear.

The message appears either in IE8 or Firefox, telling Silverlight isn't
installed. But it only seems to say it on the nascar.com site, not the
silverlight site, hence asking if anybody else knows of a site that uses
Silverlight, so I can test it in IE8 and/or Firefox.

I went to that site (using IE8 and Firefox 3.6) and I got no alerts of any
kinds. However, I may have installed Silverlight because I do lots of
programming for websites.

I suggest you could download silverlight manually from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/

by installing this, all sorts of alerts will definitely stop. Some sites
will inevitably require you to have silverlight if you want to enjoy their
site because everything will only load in silverlight. It is a "substitute"
for Adobe Flash and microsoft is trying hard for everybody to get used to
it.

Version 4 will also be released pretty soon.

I think I'll have to wait for V4 to be out, as I've manually downloaded and
installed it too and that doesn't fix the issue....

If you go to silverlight.net and do not have it installed (or it is
broken) you will be asked if you want to install it.

If you have Silverlight installed, you will see an an animation on
silverlight.net

If you have Silverlight installed, it will show up in Add/Remove
Programs. There is no "may be installed". It is installed or it is
not installed. It could be installed and broken or nascar.com is
broken or your system is broken.

Parts of the Microsoft Technet site uses Silverlight (of course), so
if you go there you will be asked to install Silverlight if you do not
have it:

http://www.microsoft.com/emea/spotlight/

I have Silverlight installed, so I uninstalled it, rebooted and went
to silverlight.net and was asked to install it but I chose not to.

I went to nascar.com after I know Silverlight is not installed and was
not asked to install it but maybe I didn't go to the right places. Is
Silverlight installed on your system that works properly?

When visiting nascar.com, what is the message you see, when do you see
it and now you should be able to tell for sure if you have it
installed or not by visiting those other sites and checking Add/Remove
programs on both your systems. If you are not sure, uninstall it and
install it again.

You may have messed something during your troubleshooting trying
various registry changes. add ons, etc. Visit some other sites that
you know use Silverlight and where they probably have implemented it
properly (Microsoft sites).
