Just Getting Started, Computer smart level Low

I am reading so many horror stories about getting on line that I am
not sure what is the best way to approach this from my position.
Have a web page made ready to put it on line. I have a ftp user name
and password and understand I can only use a ftp server.
I have read lots of articles/books on search engines, web page
development adware etc....And wish I understood the computer
language.
What I need advice for is : What do I do once I find a company to go
with? I am just starting up and don't have a lot of money to spend, so
I need to do it wisely. Also how do I "load" my web pages. Is is a
matter of signing up with a company for "X" amount of money for
certain services (which I am not totally smart on just what I need)
then uploading my web pages to an ftp server?
If anyone wants to talk about typewriters and white out I can speak on
that---this stuff is so confusing.
THX ahead to all

How can you have a ftp user name and password if you don't yet have a
company to host your web? That will be assigned to you by the company you
choose. And, they will give you instructions as to how to ftp to their
server.

Unless, of course, the company you choose has FrontPage server extensions,
in which case you will http publish using the credentials and information
they provide you.
