jpg jpe bitmap save problems

I am running Win98 SE and the computer on its own changes
the format I am trying to save jpg's to jpe and now
bitmap. How can I make the save do the original jpg file
type? when it saved as jpe it said it was saving jpg, now
I only have the choice of bitmap and the name of untitled.
