jpegs download as untitled bmp

I'm running XP home and have all the patches and service
packs for XP and IE6. When I try to download images, they
only download as untitled BMPs. I cannot find anything in
help and Microsoft doesn't seem to want to talk to anyone
about their products. What can I do?

The usual fix is to clear your cache.
IE-Tools-Internet Options-Delete Files (in the TIF section)

That seems to work about 98% of the time but if it doesn't, close IE
and reopen and do it again. Also it has been reported that clear
cookies helps, but ensure you save any that you need.
