Can anybody help me please,

my computer reformatted itself a couple of weeks ago and i lost
all data, a friend ran a data recovery programme that got a lot of stuff back,
the problem is only about 60% of the photos returned, in thumb nail
the photos i cant open just have the jpeg logo, when i open them i get a
blank screen except for a small box in the top left hand corner with a red
cross in it, when i look at the properties of the photo it confirms that it is
a jpeg image with a file size of 425 kb, this is an example but the rest that
i cannot open are similar, one thing i have learnt is to back up valuable images

please help

sorry i forgot to say that i had tried opening the piccies with
numerous programmes including the two you suggested and
also the software supplied with the camera without any luck,
for your info i get the following text when i try to open in paint
"this is not a valid bitmap file or its format is not currently supported"
when i try to open in windows picture and fax viewer i get the following text
"no preview available"
