My Pictures in Windows XP Home Edition.

My photos have vanished from My Pictures and all I can see is an icon with
the photo type and the size. (ie. Type JPEG Size 10mb). When I try to open
the photo, the message 'No preview available' appears. Anyone any idea as to
what is going on and is there a remedy? Is there a way to restore my photos
to their former glory?

What happens if you try to open your photos in
an image editing program?

Thank you, John, for your response.. To answer your question, nothing
actually happens in an edit program when I try to open the photo, just sits
there, staring at me.

Just to clarify (I'm old you have to explain things to me)...
are you saying you cannot open any of your pictures in
an editing program?

IOW...if you open Microsoft Paint and go to...File / Open...
and browse to a picture....you cannot open the picture?

About being old, that makes two of us. I did what you suggested and the
message comes back saying 'Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid
bitmap file or it's format is not currently supported' Any clues in there?

A few ideas...good luck...

It's beginning to sound like your
pictures may be corrupted.

Does the following article offer anything useful:

Format Is Not Supported" Error Messages

Could you upload one of the pictures
to the following site so I could have a
go at viewing it?

"YouSendIt"
http://www.yousendit.com/

All you have to do is enter an e-mail
address in the "To:" (Recipient) field
and click the "Browse" button to select
the file you wish to upload. Then click
the "Send It" button.

The next screen that appears will give
you the download link. Just copy/paste
it into the message to your recipients
who can download and view the file on
their computer.

There is a registry patch at the link below
that *might* solve your problem.

Hi John, thank you for your suggestions. I'll take them in turn. On the 'no
preview' and 'file format not supported' it says the files are compressed due
to something in AUL or Compusave. As I have neither of these on my system, I
got no joy there as no suggestions were presented for consideration,if there
was another cause.

The system restore would have been the perfect answer but when I checked my
restore settings, the 'turn off system restore' box was ticked. My Pictures
says that the photos were modified ( I don't remember what I could have done)
on 28th. Sep. and I checked my restore on 3rd Oct.

I could use Send it, what email will I use for the recipient?

I looked at Editing the reistry and, to be honest, I may as well have been
gazing into a field of clover, it made that much sense to me. As you may
have guessed already, I'm a bit naive when it comes to computers apart from
the basics.

I tried to run 'restore thumbnail views' from kellys-korner but it didn't do
anything.
It had a 'tick the box' type of page for the images but hadn't got JPEG so I
ticked the nearest (MPEG) but nothing happend.

This is where I'm at now, I really appreciate your interest in this and your
various suggestions. Much obliged.

Any address will do.

Just stay on the site until the file is
uploaded and copy the download
link...then paste it in a reply to this
forum.

I have the same problem. I downloaded photos from a 1gb xd card onto the
computer. I can't see half of the pictures. It makes no sense. There will be
the sailboat with the sun and then maybe one picture and then the sailboat
for another 20 photos or so. I would love some help on this.

Are all the photos in the .jpg format?

Ok...you cannot see all the thumbnails...but can
you open the pictures and view them full size?

Have you tried deleting your Temporary Internet

On the thumbnails I have the sailboat. When I click on that thumbnail I get
the no preview available.

Still reading all kinds of posts looking for an answer that might help me
see these pictures.

==========================
If you see the sailboat it's an
icon...a thumbnail is when you
see a small version of the actual
picture.

Sounds like corrupted pictures...
can you download them again?

If you downloaded direct from the
camera the batteries may have
been low...that can cause corruption.

If the pictures have been deleted
from the memory card...you could
try using the following free software
to recover them:

Recuva - File Recovery

John,

Thank you so much for your response. Sorry my vocabulary was lacking. Yes, I
get the sailboat icon instead of a thumbnail. Part of the pictures on the
card I downloaded show up and some do not. I am guessing it was low batteries
in my camera at the time I took the pictures.

I erased the images from the card before seeing if they showed up. I only
watched the numbers being downloaded. When it said complete I erased the card.

When I click on the icons and go to properties it shows the size of the
image. I hope that is enough to recover the photo.

I will try your suggestion.

Thanks
