Reducing the size of pictures.

I take pictures at full resolution which is 5Mb per photo.

I want to reduce the size to about 50Kb for emailing.

When I do this the quality is very bad, and much worse than
many photos on the internet taken with a cheaper camera with
far less resolution.

Is there a special technique for doing this?

Try using the following free WinXP PowerToy:

OK, go to the following link and download and
install: ImageResizer.exe

or...
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Then you can open any folder that contains
images and you will have an option to resize.
Just right click the selected image files and
choose Resize Pictures from the menu. You
can select one image or a whole group.

The program will place the resized copies in
the folder with your originals.
(Tip: *Never* overwrite your originals)

To insure that images in both portrait and
landscape orientation are resized to the
same dimensions...go to...Advanced...
and enter the largest number in both fields.
IOW...for 600x800...enter 800 in both fields.
Personally, I use 1024x768 for e-mail...
slightly larger file size (+ - 100kb) but you
can experiment.

IrfanView is a remarkably good freeware program which
can not only adjust sizes, but can do so in batches.
It will also convert .JPGs to TIF and vice versa singly or
in batches. HTH,

Use IrfanView - www.irfanview.com to resize & then apply sharpening after
resizing (both from the 'image' menu).

The simple way is to right click the photo and select "send to" then select
"mail recipient"
A small window opens and you select "make smaller"
The email opens with the photo attached
By using "control" of course you can select a batch of photos.
When you say the quality is bad do you mean as viewed on the screen or when
printed
The quality shown on the screen is the same whatever the resolution of the
photo.
