Joining Computer to Domain

I am trying to set up a test Domain in my lab. I tried
to join the first computer to the domain, but I get the
following message: The following error occurred
attempting to join the domain "Test": The Specified
server cannot perform the requested operation.

Could someone please point me in the right direction on
how to overcome this problem. As you guessed, I am not
an admin and I don't even play one on tv.

Thanks!

Is this Active Directory? Maybe your server isn't running a DNS server. Check the event logs for services that might not be loading properly.

Couple of questions for you: does the client have the
proper DNS Settings and what account are you using when
attempting to join the computer account do the domain?

I would also take a look at the RID Master to make sure
that there is a RID available ( meaning: that the DC that
holds the FSMO Role of RID Master has any to give out AND
that the DC that holds this role can contact the DC that
holds the FSMO Role of PDC Emulator ). How to do this:
take a look at installing the Support Tools. The Support
Tools can be located in two places: on the WIN2000 Server
CD in the Support | Tools folder or on the WIN2000 Service
Pack CD in the Support | Tools folder.

Run first the netdiag /fix and then run both netdiag /v
and dcdiag /v. This should shed some light on the
situaion.

Also, have you looked at the Event ID to see if anything
is cropping up there?

HTH,

Cary
