I currently use IE 6 with XP. How do I know if Java
applets are working properly? A test page from
Genealogy.com website shows that Java script is working
properly but not Java applets. If Java applets are not
working properly, what can I do about it?

Java and JavaScript are entirely different things. Win XP/IE6 does not
include Java support. See:

Understand that because of a court decision Microsoft has stopped all Java
support, including security updates.
