Buggy Java Version?

I just tried the speed test on DSL Reports, and received this at the end of
the test. My browser is IE 6.0.2800.1106 xpsp2
This is the first of this I've heard of & have experienced no problems
otherwise. How do I find out which version of Java I have, and is it safe
to d/l a newer version?

Our applets are tested and work with the java plugin from java.sun.com

Please consider installing the latest version of the sun java plugin
whichever version java that internet explorer installed by default, is
buggy.

I just checked under Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and it shows neither
Java Console Enabled, nor Java Logging enabled, but JIT compiler for VM is
enabled.
