Java applets won't run in IE6 all of a sudden

I've had the same version of IE6 on my computer for more than a year
now (guessing), and all of a sudden, I notice that java applets don't
work any more.

In any place where a java applet is supposed to be running, I just get
a little red square/green circle symbol.

In tools : internet options : advanced my java options are all checked
(Microsoft VM : Java console enabled, Java logging enabled, JIT
compiler).

I cannot make view : java console do anything.

My computer has no known spyware or hijacking issues, and my
Netscape/Mozilla 7.1 works fine with java.

Help me fix this, please.

Have you installed a firewall and/or pop up stopper recently? If so, look
for settings there blocking java. Also look at tools, internet options,
advanced, and scroll down to Microsoft VM and check settings there.

The issue was, I think, simpler than that. I guess Microsoft had
stopped supporting VM earlier this year, and when I did some Windows
Critical Updates a few weeks ago, something, for my own protection,
stopped the applet support.

I downloaded the current java runtime environment from Sun, installed,
restarted, problem fixed.
