Issues with Desktop Wallpaper after removing MalwareAlarm Trojan

I'm working on a friend's brand new computer (not even 2 weeks old) that,
believe it or not, already got infected with the infamous MalwareAlarm trojan
(same family as SpySheriff? Smitfraud?).

I scoured the net for any free available fixes...ran SpyBot which found and
supposedly deleted all the files. Yet, now...I cannot assign any of the
installed Windows desktop wallpapers to the desktop. The files are there, but
they just won't take.

I'm sure this has something to do with the registry and although I've had
some experience with editing the registry (and, yes, I back it up first) I am
not quite sure where to go from here at this point.

Any suggestions, ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated.....

Thanks,
Mark

Kue2,
I tried using "System Restore" but, unfortunately, that has not helped.
Remember, this is a brand new machine and the virus was contracted shortly
after it was purchased. Nonetheless, I tried restoring as far back as the
earliest restore point, but to no avail. I think I will simply use the sytem
recovery discs that came with the machine and reload all the factory
installed software, including Windows Vista Home Premium.

Still, I appreciate your input. Thanks.
