Issue with NAV or NIS?

I went into a Software store today to buy Norton Internet Security, which
includes Norton Anti-Virus.
The salesman warned me not to buy it because there have been issues with NAV
having a Virus that attaches to all files on the hard drive and eventually
destroying the data?
So I did not but it, I figured I'd ask around.

Does anyone know what he is referring to?
Is it just a scare story or hoax?

There are zero day exploits that an AV can miss. There is also malware that
will knock-out an AV too. If the malware can execute on the machine, it can
do just about anything and it doesn't make any difference what solution you
have installed on the computer.

If you're concerned, then you should practice safehex.

In spite of his ridiculous accusations, he did do you a favor by
steering you away from NAV. However, I wonder what he was
pushing instead? That would probably make for a even more
laughable story

He doesn't know what he is talking about. He might be thinking about
a fairly recent flaw in some Symantec programs discovered by eEye
digital security.

Attention Rob Rosenberger!! A salesman is giving EXPERT antivirus
advice.

Poster: There is nothing wrong with the way Norton Antivirus detects
and removes malware. The problem is it's bloated and consumes more
resources than an antivirus application should.

I recommend NOD32. It's excellent.
