NIS NAV norton anti-virus - how to disable ?

john

Hi,
I have norton internet security professional 2003 (NIS 2003)running
under XP.

I have to install some software which demands that all anti virus
software is disabled. in particular the install will involved some
reboots and so NAV must NOT start up again on reboot.

I have tried disabling it (right click on icon in system tray and
select disable and also for NIS main menu, options/nav and deselected
'enable auto protect' but when i reboot it just kicks back in as
normal.

Any help would be appreciated. Nortons built in help doesn't. :)

I know from a colleagues experience that AV software WILL screw up the
install - he had to rebuild his machine to get it to work properly
when he installed it with mcafee running so I don't want to risk it
;-)

thanks, John

my reaction to this is:

are you sure you *really* want this software?

the no-av requirement sounds suspicious - it's either doing something
it's not supposed to or (from the sounds of your friends experience)
they're doing things that are very low level but aren't of a high
enough calibre to figure out how to play nicely with existing
monitoring software... imagine if the mail man required you to leave
your front door open for extended periods of time...

Which SW is this?

It's been sometime since I used Norton to remember corectly, so this is a
very loose guide. Is there a "Launch at startup" or something similar in
Preferences/Options you could untick? Also check the Norton setup in
Control Panel. If all this fails to find where to switch it off from,
you'll have to remove the Norton launch key manually from your registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (WARNING!
only do this if you know what you're doing, e.g. Disable Norton, backup
the key, etc.) Not sure if you also need to remove a similar key from
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ too. Once you install your SW you'll have to restore
these keys to their original settings and re-enable Norton. Please
understand that this is a high risk approach, Norton may react to all this
manual alterations of the registry. I would only interfere mith my machine
in this manner if it was my only option and did not mind reinstalling
Norton if things went bad. You've been forwarned!

I can only but second Kurt's commends.

Have you tried a tweaking utility like X-Tek X-Setup? You can disable or
enable processes from auto-starting.
