Is this a record?

Student brought her laptop in yesterday.
We put AntiVir on it, as you can install that in Safe Mode and
it was just about dead in normal mode.
The scan ran for over 18 hours. Of a little over 250,000 files
scanned, slightly more than 56,000 were viruses of one sort or
another. And we'd hand-deleted an estimated 20,000 files with
the extension .t, to speed things up a bit.

We're going to check it for adware and spyware now.

That might be a record.

I once attended a VeriSign "Applied Hacking and Prevention" week-long class.
They provided me with a disk (for use in class, and that we could keep) with
tons of viruses on it. I once mistakenly scanned that disk... over 500 hits
(unique viruses, not files). I thought I had a record :)

Like...?
Well, to be honest, on this particular one, that sometimes it
is better to just wipe and re-install, like the Halls supprt
staff do. Though since we CAN clean it, and the user has no
backups, it's nice to be able to save her stuff for her.
But _usually_ we learn something interesting.

If it were your laptop, would you have a good feeling using it after
you supposedly removed all the bad stuff?

Besides, what's stopping you from making a backup and then doing a
format and re-install?

Given what I know of my and Stuart's capabilities, yes.

Well, if we'd known it'd take so long before we started, we
probably would have passed it to other people for that to
happen. We try to never format, ourselves.

I think its a thrill to have found 50000++ virus and clean them but I
dont really think it is a good idea to continue using the system
because of the aftereffects. That large number of malware might did a
lot of changes to the registry up to the point where you will have
major problems with your OS. It is a great record, yes, but I think it
will better for your student if you copied her stuff elsewhere and do
a format and a clean re-install.

Only about 5 different malwares, actually - it's just that one
of them had tens of thousands of copies of itself all over the
machine.
