Is this a record?

I was at a neighbour yesterday. She has her PC on ADSL, and she
complained her PC and browsing was slow.
She has Nortons up to date.

ran ad-ware across it

There were 129 INDIVIDUAL trojans/hijackers.

I didn't think there were that many out there.

Removed them. Reset the winsock to get rid of any remaining LSP's

Rebooted.

PC now runs like a real one.

She said "But I have Symantec anti-virus, and the guy at the store
said that's all I need"

I spent an hour and a half making sure her browser was sorted,
removing the odd dodgy program, and generally cleaning up.

How many more are out there, buying their whole PC kit from a store,
and being told "you have everything you need to be safe"?

I've had a record larger than that. One computer I had to repair had
over 300 different hijackers, dialers, and trojans on it. If you count
the individual components that were on there (not including the plugins
and executables), there were approximately 3500 components as well.

Jebus. my mind seizes up at how someone could let something go that
long for that to happen.

... and I thought 14 was a lot when I strayed in to uncertain
territory once.

And I admire how good programming all that malware is. So many
different programs and dll's etc. coexisting and running together not
crashing down the whole system all the time... ;-)

I wish these persons could use their skills in something more
beneficial.

Chicken feed - I had someone recently who had over 5000 - his wife clicked
on everything, responded to all chain letters, sent ecards galore,
downloaded any freebies advertised in emails - you could hardly see the
computer for pop-ups and added toolbars!!

Hullo, I heard my name... ;-) That particular box was an easy clean,
though. Even though she had so many files infected with viruses and
around 400 non-viral malware objects, the Bad Stuff was easily removed
with the usual tools. I didn't have to go through all kinds of Sekrit
Formulas or make any Burnt Sacrifices with this one. It isn't always
the quantity of malware that matters - it's whether or not it is
malware that is Wickedly Clever at hiding and respawning itself.

Cheers,

Malke

Hey malke-did you try David's program yet? I thought it worked great!
Hats off to him!
