Actually, ignore my last post. They are about installing Vista *from* a USB
flash drive. A more refined search didn't throw up anything.

Windows will NOT install on a "Removable" drive - that's the attribute of
USB drives that prevents it. If you want removable Windows installs you
should consider SATA external drives or eSATA as they do support OS
booting. In some rare cases you can restore an Image of a XP volume to
a USB drive and with some considerable work make it boot. The issue
is speed. A USB 2.0 Drive is only going to achieve a 25-Megabyte
transfer rate. That's slower than a Optical drive. The other issue is every
time you plug it into a different PC product activation will trigger. Again
it's not a drive being external that matters it's if it is seen by Windows
as a
removable device.

Very helpful thanks R. McCarty The reason i wanted vista on some kind of
removable device is to stop my kids playing around with my computer, i always
use user accounts but i right the password's in a scrapbook and there always
find it, and use my pc when i'm not around.
Thanks

In that case just use BitLocker, and take your USB key with you when you go.
Much much better idea.

Oh, only on Ultimate and Enterprise I think. Sorry, I tend to forget about
the other versions.

I don't really see why you couldn't just make a strong password that you can
remember, or write down very secretly.

Or threaten to beat the crap out of the little bastards, worked for my dad,
look how good I turned out.
