Irfanview Problem

Janice

Hello,

I am experiencing a problem with Irfanview 3.92 that I have never seen in
any other version that I've tried. I would appreciate if other people
using this version would see if they can replicate the bug before I
report it to the developer, in case it's just me. :)

The problem occurs when I am cropping pictures that are larger than the
current viewing window size. I'm working in 800X600 mode, so anyone who
follows along using the downloadable examples I'm going to provide may
need to do so as well.

Here is an example of an original photo of mine that was previously
resized to 800X600:

http://www.hopkinsfan.net/original_image.jpg (157 KB)

Let's say I want to crop this down, and I make a vertical selection
outline in Irfanview by dragging from the top left to the bottom right of
the area I want to keep, as in this screenshot:

http://www.hopkinsfan.net/ready_to_crop1.jpg (155 KB)

Notice that the scrollbar in that screenshot is down at the very bottom,
because I haven't scrolled back up after drawing the selection outline.
You'll see why this is significant in a few moments.

Now I tell Irfanview to make the crop. The result, rather than matching
the entire area that I had outlined, is cut off at the top where the edge
of the Irfanview viewing window had been located after I finished drawing
the outline!

http://www.hopkinsfan.net/crop_results1.jpg (94.8 KB)

If, on the other hand, after I draw the selection outline I scroll back
up to the top of the photo, like this (you'll see that the scrollbar is
at the top now):

http://www.hopkinsfan.net/ready_to_crop2.jpg (155 KB)

Then the crop works properly, using the entire outlined selection rather
than cutting anything off that's outside the viewing area:

http://www.hopkinsfan.net/crop_results2.jpg (117 KB)

The same effect occurs with a horizontal selection outline that's bigger
than the viewing area. If after drawing a horizonal outline I do not
scroll back to the left, my crop will be improperly cut off on the left.
If I do scroll back to the left, it will work just fine.

So, can anybody reproduce this? Thanks in advance.

Yup, same thing happens here. I don't consider it a bug though. I mean I
would normally crop using the whole picture anyway, i.e. reduce the display
to fit the whole photo in the Irfanview windows, THEN crop it.

Yes, I've found the same problem, and being a not experienced user of
Irfanview I thought I was doing something wrong...

BTW, your roses are beautiful!

That's an extra step that wasn't necessary before, though. :-(

Sometimes a full-size view is nice so you can make sure you're seeing all
the details before you crop.

But thanks for letting me know. :)

Yeah, I just zoom out then crop. For me that's actually easier, but yeah it
would be nice to have it all ;-D.

No, it's something that has changed since version 3.85, which I was using
previously, and may go back to soon. :-(

Another thing that's odd is that you can keep dragging the selection
outline past the visible window, all the way to the edge of the screen.
Take a close look at my ready_to_crop2.jpg screenshot, and you'll see
that the selection area is recorded at the top as 559 X 604 -- even
though the second dimension shouldn't be more than 600.

Thank you. I took that photo in my mother's garden a few years ago. :)

Well, I can always go back to version 3.85 to have it all again. :)

But I'll write to Irfan Skiljan and see what he has to say about this
effect. Maybe there's a good reason for it.

It's more likely a bug than a new feature. Please write to Irfan as you
said you would. He takes such hints very seriously. Please bear in mind
that he gets heavy loads of mail. So it can take a few days until you get
an answer.

Hi folks,

I heard back from Irfan and he does know about this bug involving
incorrect cropping of large images. He sent me a test version of the
3.92 exe file that fixes the problem.

Yes, I'm sure Irfan gets tons of email.

The test version that he sent me fixes the incorrect cropping, but it
does still allow you to drag a selection outline made within a large
image past the edge of the view window. So for instance I can make a
selection that's supposedly 818 pixels wide out of an image that's only
800 pixels wide. But he's definitely working on it.

Concerning cropping of images: I tried to crop large JPG-images. In the
new cropped image on the left remained a vertcal line. I think it
actually is the selection line that indicates the cropping-area, while
working in the original image. I removed the line in another program
with a scratch remover.
Ever noticed this (I use Irfanview version 3.92 acoording to the
help/about)?
Greetings

No, I don't think I've ever seen that happen. Perhaps it is a related
issue that can happen on some systems.

Yes, it frequently happens to me. Sometimes the junk line changes color.
I usually flood-fill in another editor, but it's a nuisance.

Update from Irfan: He says he added the ability to draw the selection
outline past the edge of the window because many people don't like having
the rectangle restricted to the image borders.
