IPC$ share password challenge in Win98 when accessing a WinXP box

When attempting to use a printer or access a shared drive
on a WinXP box from a Win98 box I am now challenged for a
password for the IPC$ share on the WinXP box.

This has only happened in the last day or two and I have
made no changes in the configuration on the WinXP box at
all.

I have a network and can access any shares on the Win98
box from the XP box. TCP/IP works fine - I can ping each
box from the other. I have turned the firewall OFF - so
that is not the problem.

For some reason the XP box seems to be denying all access
from the Win98 box. They are both in the same workgroup
and all relevant services are working on the XP box.

Does anybody have any clues?? It has got to be something
really simple but I can't put my finger on it - or it is
so sipmle that I am overlooking the solution.

I have even deleted all shares and reinstated them.

Haalp !!!!

I already have a user setup on the XP box - but still no
luck. As I say - this was working fine just a few days
ago - and for no reason I can think of - now it is not.

Thanks anyway.

The dreaded IPC$. The horror... The horror...
Please try this and please reply back as to whether it resolved
the issue or not for my own education on this issue. Thank you.
You say you have set up a User on the XP box. Fine.
Do you also actually log in on the 98 box as some User at the
Client for Microsoft Networks log on box? If not, please do so.
I mean that you need to click "OK" at that log on as some user.

You did not mention if this is XP Home or XP Pro and that would
have been some helpful information.

I am going to assume it is XP Pro.
In My Computer, click on Tools | Folder Options | View Tab
We want to have "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" checked.
It is at the bottom of the list.

Then in Control Panel | User Accounts
Make sure the Guest Account is turned on.

Right click on My Computer icon and click on "Manage"
In Computer Management, expand Local Users and Groups
Click on the Users folder
Right click on the Guest Account and click on "Set Password..."
Don't be alarmed by the ominous sounding warning that pops up,
and click on "Proceed"
Leave the password boxes blank and click OK.
OK or close your way on out of everything.

Restart both computers and log on to both of them.
Try accessing the XP box from the 98 box.

Success? Please let me know by posting back. Thank you.
