"Invalid partition table" Error?

Bobby Hata

Hi,

Today, my computer just sat there rebooting itself over
and over. Somehow i got into recovery console off the cd
and did the fixmbr command. Now when i boot, i get this
error

Invalid partition table

How do i go about fixing this? I just want to get my data
out and i'll do a clean install again...?

Thanks

Your partition might be toast.
CHKDSK may correct the problem but might cause you to lose
the entire volume or partition.
If you need the data it might be a good time to run data
recovery software before attempting to use CHKDSK (which
will most likely overwrite the partition information)

You had a boot sector virus, that had moved the partition table
elsewhere and replaced the code by its own code, which among other
things, retrieved the PT when needed. You have replaced with standard
code and broken that diversion.

Go to www.bootitng.com and in Free downloads get the MBRWORK one. Put
it on a DOS mode boot floppy (eg a Win98 startup floppy, or even one
made in XP by Formatting a floppy in My computer and checking 'MSDOS
Startup disk')

Boot that , run MBRWORK and give
1
to back up the MBR
3
then
4
to clear out, then there will be a possibility of
A
to search the disk for partitions and rebuild the table, then finally
5
to write fresh standard MBR code
and
6
to set the appropriate one as the Active one to boot from. If you have
more than one partition on the disk this may need a little experiment,
but it is *probably* the first one found
