Internet Sharing

At long last I have got my two computers running XP Home to talk to each
other via a direct crossover ethernet cable, firewalls were the problem in
the end. Thanks to those who offered advice.

I have a Gigabyte motherboard with two ethernet connectors, one to a cable
modem and the other to my second computer. Is it possible, using this
configuration, to enable the second computer to access the internet?

Yes, bot will need to enable Internet Connection Sharing or load some
other nat or proxy software on the machine with the cable modem.

ICS will of course work, but why not invest a few bucks and get a router.
ICS is a bit flaky. Easier set up and that way, either machine can connect
to the Internet without the "main" machine being left on.
Routers are cheap now.
With your setup you would need a straight through Cat5 cable to the modem
and a crossover cable to the other machine.
Using a router, only regular or straight through cables are used.

As I learned 'after-the-fact', some new routers can detect and use
crossover cables too.

I used ICS for several years, starting with Win98SE, then WinME and finally
XP. ICS got progressively better with each new OS. The XP incarnation of ICS
was a snap to setup. It worked out very well for our situation, including
online gaming and IRC/messaging progs from the client computer... but don't
be doing a lot of rebooting on the ICS server.

ICS is working very well on XP (It works well on Win98 too , but the main
machine must be kept on all time.
Using a router you'll get rid of the dialler (The router will dial for you),
and the ICS which both require some resources.
On most new routers you'll get firewall too ;-)
