Internet Explorer does not recognise some file extensions

Internet Explorer does not recognise some file extensions such as .cgi. Trying to access a SSL site pops up a box which asks do you want to save or download the file. IE should load the page instead.

Also had the problem with .ica files even though the Citrix client has been downloaded and installed.

I assume it's a security/options issue - does anyone know what the settings are in Internet Options?

Check this out for your problem extensions.
For .cgi do not check the "Confirm Open after Download" box.

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

Hi, thanks for your reply. This is actually a problem on a client's machine - Win2000 & IE6.

The solution you gave is for opening local files with a .cgi extension - it does not relate to Internet Explorer. I don't have an entry in my folder options for .cgi yet my IE loads a page where the server code is written in a .cgi file.

It definately relates to the security options or advanced tab in Tools->Internet options... but I can't work out what the options are.

Thanks,
Ron
