Internet Explorer displays web pages incorrectly

I friend of my wife's computer which I originally helped to purchase (
so I get asked everytime something goes wrong), has had problems
diplaying web pages in Internet Explorer. Win XP with SP2 installed.

The problem is that coloured boxes used as backgrounds to menus etc
appear white. The only way to tell if there are boxes is that the
corners show up but not the colour in the box.

She loves installing extra toolbars and other 'freebes'. I ran AdAware
and it found 700 items to remove. After running AdAware about 5 times
it finally ran clean but the problem did not go away.

The solution I have used is to install Firefox, which displays the
pages correctly. The pages also display correctly on my PC in Internet
Explorer.

I am nearly at the position to tell her that the only solution is to
delete and reload windows. I know that that she does not want to do
that if possible, as she would lose all her Mods.

Does anyone have any ideas where I might find where internet explorer
stores how it displays web pages,or how to fix this problem.
I can edit the registry so that is not a problem, except that often
system restore often automatically removes my changes.

Thanks of any advice of where to look next

This is typical of a system that is setup in secure mode - it will not
display cross site images, only the images that come from the selected
website itself.

There is a weather page where the icons for the days weather have this
problem, if you disable images that are not from the website you won't
see the pretty days weather icon image - it links to akamia or something
like that.

If you really must lessen IE security, just reset everything to default
- open security, select INTERNET ZONE, reset, do the same on the
Advanced page.

Keep in mind that if you reset the IE settings to default, you are going
to expose her to many threats/spyware/loggers. It would be best to teach
her how to use FireFox.

Open IE Properties/General Tab
Click the colors button. Make sure "use windows colors" is selected
