Internet dialer problems

For some time, I've been using my ISP on XP, brining up a dialog to
connect as needed. Once in a while, another dialog box shows up,
asking me to connect to the Internet. It is not configured correctly
with a user id and password, so even if I clicked "Connect" it would not
work. So far, so good. A few days ago, this second dialog box started
appearing constantly, even if I brought my browser (Netscape 7.02) down.
I finally tired to do something about it by clicking the dialog's
"Properties" button and changing the "redial" options to those that I
hoped would make the box stop appearing at all. Instead, I've worsened
my problem. Now, instead of just a dialog box appearing that asks me to
connect, the rogue program is attempting this without prompting me for
it. There appears no way to interrupt it while it is attempting to
connect and I can find nothing on the COntrol Panel that will let me
target this particular connection program and reset its redial
properties back to what they were before (annoying but not as bad as
now). HOw can I get a hold of this program and change its properties or
make it stop altogether? Quick, before I lose any more hair. Thanks.

Hi Ken,

Right click My Network Places/Properties/Advanced (top toolbar)/Dial-Up
Preferences/Enable Auto-Dial by Location/Uncheck all locations and check off
always ask me before auto dialing. Also, Disable autodial while I am logged
on.

In the Enable Auto-Dial By Location dialog box, select each location for
which you want the automatic dialing feature to operate. Reboot.

Disable or Enable AutoDial (Line 91)

To view the list of names and addresses recorded by AutoDial, type the
following command at a command prompt: rasautou -s

To delete a name or address entry from the list: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\RAS Autodial\Addresses

You can delete any TCP/IP addresses that you see under this key. Note that
AutoDial can use IP addresses, DNS fully qualified domain names (FQDN), and
NetBIOS names.

Disable "Log on using dial-up connection" (Line 77)

Sounds like some adware.

Download and install AdAware and SpyBot and see what they turn
up. Shutting off the pop-up dialer is not the way to solve this
problem. It would also be prudent to install norton AV and
enable XP's built in firewall features.
