Internal Erro r2718

I have run Registry Mechanic 3 flawlessly for a long time . However,
yesterday I installed Startup Manager Platinum 2004, didn't like it and
un-installed it. I cleaned any reference to it from the whole C drive and
the Registry.

From that point on, whenever I started Registry Mechanic 3, Startup Manager
also started up, even though I could find no further references to it on C
Drive or in the Registry. In fact, when I used the Windows task manager to
shut of Startup Manager, it would end both Startup and Registry Mechanic
simultaneously!

I even deleted all files that even contained references to
Startup Manager. I followed the same procedure with my Registry Mechanic. I
then re-installed Registry Mechanic, but the same thing happened. Not all of
Startup Manager, but the install process would start until I got an
"Internal Error 2718" message.

I again completely removed Registry Mechanic 3 and downloaded Registry
Mechanic 4 and finally got it to run. However, the Startup Manager install
file still begins to run. I have to click it off about four times before I
can get Registry Mechanic 4 to run, like I had with Registry Mechanic 3.

I would appreciate help on this matter. I had thought that Registry Mechanic
would eliminate this error.

Have you tried using System Restore to take you back to a time prior to when
this began. Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore.

Thank you for responding. I was cleaning my computer of unwanted material
when this started. Normally I follow this procedure of deleting all
references to a program in my drives and the registry. I can't search by the
manufacturer name because I've downloaded another Startup Manager Platinum
2004 hoping that by re-installing I could get the Company name and that by
un-installing a duplicate copy that the un-install would overwrite and wipe
out whatever corrupt file there is. However, I can't re-install the
duplicate because the error message says that there is a previous copy
installed and it must be removed first.
I would appreciate your thoughts on this as to other avenues of approach.
I found that my Restore was turned off and therefore unusable. I had had
some form of virus so I had re-installed Norton. I don't know if it turned
off Restore.
Thanks

It's hard to say what's going on here. The reference for the code says
missing installer package. That said, you've done so much rooting around in
your registry, it's hard to determine if that is in fact the case or if it's
due to something you might have deleted in the registry.

You've done this on your own up to now and given what you have done, I can
only advise that you try to backtrack. Problem is, you can't seem to
reinstall what you uninstalled.

I don't recommend registry cleaners nor do I recommend people going into
their registry and manually deleting all references to uninstalled
applications. Most users who routinely do this, generally have good backups
and do regular imaging of their setup to protect against problems such as
this.

You may waste a lot of time trying to run this down, chasing lead after lead
only to reach a dead end. If I were faced with all the skullduggery that
may be involved and true, it might turn out to be quite simple, I start
over, either restore an old image and restore my data from backup or run XP
setup, formatting during setup and reinstall XP, my apps and restore my data
from backup.
