Installing Fax Services on my laptop

My Compaq V2010US Laptop did not have Windows XP Fax Services installed when
I bought it. I tried to install it via two methods.

First,

From the Compaq supplied Window XP(SP2) CD using Install Optional Windows
Components. I checked Fax Services and got a message saying, "Setup cannot
copy the file fxscomex.dl_." It was pointed to C:\i386 and a search
revealed that file
was there. I pointed it to G:(My CD RW) and then the i386 folder and still
got the message. The file was on the CD in the i386 folder.

I tried again and got the same message except the file that could not be
found was fxsclnt.exe even though that file was in the C:\i386 folder.

Second,

I tried to add Fax Services from the XP Control Panel/Add Remove with the
same sort of messages about not being able to find files on either the CD or
in C:\i386.

Under each method , the file that could not be found was different each time
I tried.

I have added Fax Services to several XP systems and thought I followed the
same methods as before. What might have I done wrong this time and what
must I do to get Fax Services installed?

Thank you very much.

Typically (and actually, in this case) files such as xxx.dl_ or xxx.ex_ are
compressed and need to be EXPANDed before they can be used. See hints here for
installing WinXP fax: http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/FAQFAX.htm

Thank you very, very much, Lem.

I haven't done it yet and probably wont until after Christmas but I expect
the document you referred to will solve the problem. It makes sense anyway.

I guess my success with prior installations was because I was dealing with a
retail version of XP and it did the uncompacting automatically.

Thanks again.

YW. Happy Holidays.

FYI, there is a newsgroup especially for problems with WinXP printing and faxing
issues. It's called, not surprisingly, microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax
