"Installer is no longer responding"

J

Jeff

When I try to install the software for my new cd-rom
drive, the status bar stops about 75% of the way through
and then after a long time, a message pops up that
says, "Installer is no longer responding."

This happens over and over again and this is the second
cd-rom drive software that it is doing it on. Everything
is XP compatible.

Thanks

Hi Jeff,

Let's clean up the installer.

Start/run services.msc, scroll down to "Windows Installer" and double click
it. Stop the service if it is running, set the startup type line to
disabled. Click apply/ok and reboot.

Delete the contents of the temp folders, there may be a file in there
interfering with the setup routine of the installer. Get both:

C:\Windows\temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\local settings\temp

Now reverse the first set of steps and reenable the Windows Installer (You
can just set the startup type to manual). Reboot.

Turn off all other running programs, especially your antivirus software. Use
ctrl+shift+escape, if necessary, to "end task" on everything.

Now retry installing some software.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for your help! I have followed your directions
exactly. There was one thing I could not delete in Local
Settings Temp folder so I renamed that folder and created
another Temp folder.

Zone Alarm and Norton are both disabled and there are no
applications running in the Task Manager.

The status bar still stalls out at 75% and then later on I
get the "Installer is no longer responding".

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Jeff

Hi,

Try restarting in Safe mode and trying it from there. To easliy reach safe
mode, start/run msconfig, go to the boot.ini tab and enable the safeboot
option.
