Installation Printer on LPT: "System cannot find files spezified"

Hi to all!

May be one of you has an idea to solve my problem:

On my laptop I've tried to install a HP deskjet 720C printer on LPT1.
Windows (xP pro SP2 with latest patches) recognize it and pops up the
hardware wizard.
Since there are no drivers available from HP for XP, I choose the printer
manually from the list in the wizard.

Windows starts installation and copies the necessary files.
But in the end it stops with the message, that the installation hasn't been
successful and "the system cannot find the files specified".
Despite the printer is listed under Printers/Fax and works properly!!

But unfortunately with every start the hardware wizards pops up again and
reports new found hardware (the printer).

I've checked the Microsoft Website and deleted the LPTENUM key from the
registry as described in MS-KB. ->no success!

I tested some measures that I found on HP Homepage (looking for Files with
hpz, .... and delete them).
-> didn't help!

In former times Windows had once installed the printer properly.
I don't know, what I did wrong this time.

The only thing I did:
On the other partition (D:) was a further folder, named Windows with the
same structure as in partition C.
But most of the folders were empty, apart from System32.

I looked up the registry if there were some entries referring to D:\windows.
Since this wasn't the case I removed the complete folder und substructure.

Is it possible, that Windows is looking for files that have been resided on
D:\windows?
How can I find that out?

How does the hardware-wizard-mechanism work?
It seems that something is missing, so that it recognizes the printer again
and again.

Is the message, that the system cannot find the files real or is it just
pseudo and has a complete other reason?

Thx in advance!

Michael

A first step might be to use device manager, and see if there are printer
related entries that have a flag indicating a problem.

Did you select the show hidden devices option in Device manager?
In the win 9x versions, this problem was usually easily curable by changing
one LSB (bit) of data in a printer related registry entry. I don't know if
this is still the case in XP.
