Inherited Windows 2000 Terminal Server.

I've just recently started working for a new company. Mainly my
experience is in *nix type environments. I have had experience running
a Windows 2000 server at my previous place of employment but the setup
here is much more complicated. There is no one here to help me
understand how everything is set up. I've contacted the vendor who
initially setup our network but since they are a small company who
makes their money off of on-site service calls, the guy on the phone
was actually pretty rude to me when I told him I was working here.

Basically I'm having trouble accessing the MMC snap-ins for AD. Right
now the only computer I have to work with is the terminal server, which
I can only log on locally. Now because it is not part of the domain
(which I don't really understand) I can't access any of the Active
Directory management features in MMC.

I plan on purchasing a book to help me understand my situation a
little better but I was hoping that someone might be able to more
clearly explain to me why the terminal server is not part of the
domain, and what I need to do in order to use the AD snap-in to manage
user and group settings. I have read multiple MS KB articles on using
the snap-in but there is no page that describes what requirements that
need to be met BEFORE using the snap-in.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

additional info: When I try and connect to the domain I get an error
"Cannot connect to pre-windows 2000 domain: <domainName>"

This server's "Permission Compatibility" is set to "Terminal Server 4.0
Users" could this be causing the AD snap-ins to think that the domain
is pre-Windows 2000?

I believe I may know the problem here. We have a Cent OS 4.2 server
running here in the office and up untill now I was unsure as to what it
does.

Now I believe the Linux server is acting as the PDC in our network
using Samba. But if this is the case is there an easy way to manage the
user and computer settings? It seems like I will have to ssh into this
box and just try and add all users and computers manually.

This will be rather unfortunate because all of the documentation I've
read about adding users so far have been a lot less polished than the
equivelant procedures using MMC.
From what I have discerned so far I will need to create user accounts
on the Linux server for each new client node that I wish to join the
domain, and also use the net command to create the username and
password that will be used to log into the domain.

Actually as frustrating as that might sound, I'm a little relieved to
think that I may get to play with this neat *nix server that I have
just been drooling over untill now.

Again any help is appreciated.

Wish me luck!
